As adults, we all know that our home can be a minefield of distraction. That’s why when it comes to homework time, having a dedicated space in your home where your kids can concentrate and be inspired without distraction will make a whole world of difference. Here are a few things to think about when creating that homework-friendly spot in your home.

Window seat. Lighting makes a huge difference in our ability to do work efficiently. In fact, science shows that the difference in our productivity levels in artificial light compared to daylight is quite staggering. So when choosing where to setup your homework space, make sure you’ve got a good source of natural light nearby.

Brain food! Certain foods can help increase the blood flow to the brain and help you stay focused on the task at hand. Beets are commonly regarded as one of the best brain foods, but if you’re having trouble getting your kids to eat beets, eggs and oats should do the trick as well!

Color me productive. Color can significantly affect your emotions and productivity. Because of this, you’ll be able to increase productivity levels by painting the walls in your homework space a color that will help keep those brain cells focused. The SheKnows blog has some suggestions. And the wall will look even better covered with honor roll certificates!

Comfort is key. Investing in a nice, ergonomic chair that will help ensure that the time spent working is done comfortably.

Clean and tidy. Having a nice and organized desk area will help your child get into a productive mindset. Check out these awesome tips for making your space unique and organized.

On the clock. Many children have difficulty working for prolonged periods of time. Help break up the work by implementing a kitchen timer. As an example, set a goal of completing 10 math problems, when your child has completed those problems, reward them with a 5-minute break and reset the timer. When the timer goes off, it’ll be time for another 10 problems.
