Tale of a New Trail

Pardee Homes, the City of San Diego and the San Diego Mountain Biking Association recently teamed up to extend the Los Penasquitos trail system for trail users. More than 60 volunteers worked on the trail project, currently dubbed the Cobbles Extension, in late February.

The new half-mile trail is located off Del Vino Court and Cadence Isle Court within the premier, award-winning Pardee Homes community of Alta Del Mar in North San Diego County. Via an undercrossing beneath Del Vino Court, the extension connects Del Mar Mesa to trails in Penasquitos Canyon. A public access easement will be provided to the City of San Diego for public use of the trail.

Long committed to green building, Pardee Homes is known for developing communities that emphasize trail access, open space, habitat preservation and protection of wildlife corridors. We were excited to work with the San Diego Mountain Biking Association to enhance and improve access to the trail system, an initiative we hope will offer benefits for the community for years to come.

Experienced trail builders from the International Mountain Bicycling Association’s Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew were on hand to teach proper trail building techniques and help with the extension. The Trail Care Crew includes a full-time, professional team of trail experts who travel the country year-round leading trail building schools and working with government officials and land managers to improve local mountain biking opportunities. IMBA crews have led more than 1,500 trail projects since the program debuted in 1997.

The Trail Care Crew and volunteers used sustainable trail building techniques to create a lasting trail that will require minimal maintenance. This will help reduce trail damage, protect the environment and enhance visitor enjoyment. The new trail is still underway, and is expected to open in Spring 2016.
