5 Backyard Camping Ideas for Families
If your family is seeking an adventure, there’s no reason to look further than your own backyard. Not only is backyard camping really convenient, it doesn’t break the bank either. Here are five ideas to try for a family-friendly backyard camping experience.
Make a Tent
You don’t need to invest in fancy camping equipment to spend a night in your own backyard. There are great simple solutions for families who want to spend quality time outdoors but retreat back to their comfy beds when it’s time to call it a night. Have the kids pitch in building the tent by following directions and working as a team. If you’re looking for something extra, another option is to make a roomy glamping (glamorous camping) tent with cozy flooring, an air mattress, plenty of blankets and pillows, plus some string lights for ambiance.
Fire Up the Grill
A fire pit isn’t necessary in order to enjoy a good campfire. An outdoor fireplace or a grill is just as fun! Because you’re at home and have access to running water (and your own indoor or outdoor kitchen), try some creative grilling recipes like pizza nachos or campfire breakfast burger biscuits. Don’t forget the s’mores!
Watch a Movie
Backyard movie night might become a family tradition. A lawn party movie screen can be made using a digital projector against a white canvass like a painter’s dropcloth or just a white bedsheet. Projectors range in price — you can find them online or check your local camera shop for projector rentals.
Yard games are a great way to soak in some sunshine and get the kids exercising. Depending on the number of people involved, hide-and-seek, sleeping bag races and capture the flag are great options for active game play. Or, try inventing a game or two of your own to keep the surprise factor elevated all evening.
Glow-in-the-dark bubbles are a fun nighttime activity that will surely entertain the kids. Mix non-toxic glowing paint and bubble solution (try a 50:50 mixture first) to create the glowing bubble concoction. You may need to expose the solution to daylight for a while to ensure it actually glows in the dark.
