Save Time with Drop Zones

LivingSmart Homes Providence, Las Vegas

A designated drop zone near a busy entrance to your home could mean the end of frantic searches for missing keys or wayward backpacks! Check out these ideas for creating the perfect launch pad for your family:

Choose the place. Many of our new homes have a drop zone incorporated into their design, but if your home doesn’t have one, they can be simple to create. Turn an entry hall or laundry room into the hardest working room in the house.

Not a lot of space? Add seating with cubbies for shoes and other items without taking up much room. We found tips for organizing the mudroom at Martha Stewart.

Keys, please. Designate a spot for those keys in your drop zone. A decorative key holder with hooks can be attached to the wall, or choose a pretty bowl or basket and place it on a small table in your entryway or drop zone.

Unlikely uses. Try outdoor or garden furniture, which will hold up to damp clothing or muddy shoes on rainy days. Or turn a bookshelf on its side and place bins inside. Check out Real Simple for ideas.

Hang it up. For little ones, hang pegs about three feet high so they can easily hang up coats and backpacks. Hang towel rails on the back of door or hang a shoe organizer and use pockets for small items.

Think inside the box. Use the inside of doors and cabinets and add shelves, peg board, cork tiles, whiteboard hooks or a chalkboard to keep organized.

Mud matters. A handy outdoor welcome mat placed inside the doorway will help keep mud from being tracked inside. For extra-dirty soles, keep a box of baby wipes nearby.

Corral sports gear. Keep it in a deep plastic bin in the garage or near the family entrance to keep mud, dirt and grass out of the house.

Combine new and old. Make your drop zone unique and fun by using memorable touches. Hang your grandfather’s fishing pole and old hat. Or decorate with school artwork for fond childhood memories.
