Looking to Relocate? Here are 5 Important Things to Consider

While moving tips are easy to come by, it’s much harder to figure out how to relocate your entire life to a new town or a new state. That’s why we’ve put together five key considerations for planning a successful relocation. (If you already have a good game plan, here are some truly useful tips for moving and packing.)

1. What is life like in your potential new hometown?
Even if you’re making an in-state move, it’s always a good idea to find out everything you can about the area you’re considering. How’s the weather, compared to where you currently live? What are different parts of town like? Where are the best places to engage in the activities you love (e.g., running trails, art districts, shopping meccas, etc.)?

Don’t forget your healthcare needs. U.S. News and World Report has a searchable list of the best hospitals in various areas across the country. It’s also a good idea to investigate local school districts. Even if you don’t have kids, the quality of the school district can affect home values.

2. What is your budget for buying a new home?
First, assess the economic situation and cost of living in your new area. (The Council for Community and Economic Research is a good resource.)

Then, create an experimental monthly budget using general numbers for your new hometown. This will help you understand what you can afford in a monthly payment. That number, plus the funds you have available for a down payment, will help you create a ballpark budget for your new home. Our mortgage partner, TRI Pointe Connect, has a handy affordability calculator.

3. Which areas of town appeal to you the most?
If you’re able, visit your new hometown for an extended period and explore the neighborhoods on your “possible” list. If you can’t make it in person, start reading the local daily newspaper, any alternative weeklies, and a few local lifestyle accounts on social media. Get more community-specific information by visiting their websites or social media accounts.

With more people working or attending school from home, reliable Internet access is absolutely vital. BROADBANDNOW® has a simple tool that lets you see the available providers, plans, prices and ratings by ZIP code.

4. What are your must-haves and nice-to-haves for your new home?
Whether you make a simple list or an elaborate vision board, map out what you’re looking for. The number of bedrooms and bathrooms is a given, but now’s your opportunity to think about options and features that would really improve your life. Think about spaces for work and/or school, room for hobbies and activities, etc.

5. Once you’ve answered these questions, it’s time to get serious about shopping.
Exploring model homes and different floor plans is a lot of fun. However, relocating can sometimes make that challenging, especially if you’re moving a long way or have limited time. (If you really like to plan ahead, check out our handy moving checklist and timeline.)
