Movie Night at the (Backyard) Drive-In
Drive-in movies are enjoying a resurgence in popularity. But why drive to the theater when you can create your own drive-in (or rather walk-in) movie night in your backyard? Here’s what you need for an Oscar-winning evening in a Pardee home.
Lights, camera, action.
If you have a projector and screen on hand, great. If not, they’re available online for a range of prices. But don’t get too caught up in the technical details. After all, you are watching a movie outdoors, not in a high-definition surround-sound theater. A freestanding screen is ideal, but there are lots of ways to improvise. A wall along the back side of your living room could suffice. Or, hang a flat white sheet to the fence or back wall and secure it from the wind.
Pardee Homes’ backyards offer plenty of room to spread out under the stars. Lay lots of blankets out around the yard (and keep some extras on hand for covering under cooler evenings). Scatter in some lounge chairs, bean bag chairs and oversized pillows to ensure everyone settles in comfortably.
Pick the movie.
Backyard movie fare should be something the entire family can enjoy. How about a classic western, Disney original or previous summer blockbuster? A themed double-header – Back to the Future and Back to the Future Part II, for example – can keep the evening going longer. Or, consider an age-appropriate flick that was filmed or set locally for a fun game of “name that place.”
Create a concession stand.
What’s a movie night without popcorn and candy? Set up your own concession stand complete with small bags of popcorn and mini-boxes of Twizzlers, Junior Mints and other favorites. Place waters, sodas and adult beverages in an iced tub for easy access. You can take your movie menu up a notch with pre-curtain call burgers and hot dogs on the grill. Going for a Harry Potter theme night? A Harry Potter menu is a must.
Add in some extras.
Make your backyard movie a night to remember with a little extra pizzazz. Hand out glow in the dark bracelets or cups. Cook s’mores on the outdoor grill between the night’s feature attractions. Continue the movie-star vibe with star-shaped cookies, or top off the evening’s fun with a game of charades.
