Relax and Connect with Nature this Labor Day
Labor Day is that time-honored celebration of both the end of summer and our nation’s hardworking labor force. This Labor Day, why not spend it simply enjoying the great outdoors? Here are four ideas to relax and enjoy nature this September.
Plan a patio picnic.
There’s no need to venture far to enjoy a great picnic. Pardee Homes patios and yards offer the perfect palette for your own private dining escape. Consider a theme to your menu (red, white and blue?) and your spread’s accessories. Or, how about a “can you grill it” cookout where each family member contributes a not-so-traditional side dish idea to the traditional burgers and hot dogs?
Visit a farm.
Enjoy the sunshine and score some fresh, locally sourced produce from a day trip to a local farm. Just 25 miles from Beaumont, Gless Ranch in Riverside produces grapefruit, oranges, dates, avocados and more. Browse the farmers market, or order ahead for curbside pickup.
Stock up on fresh-from-the-field tomatoes at Underwood Family Farm’s Pick Your Own Roma Tomatoes event. Tomatoes are available for picking Saturday and Sunday on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5 and 6, from 6 a.m. to 12 noon. The price is $.35 per pound. The farm’s Moorpark location is about 50 miles from Los Angeles.
Take a saunter.
John Muir said people should saunter, not hike. So in the spirit of a leisurely Labor Day outdoors, enjoy the local scenery with an easy saunter. Oak Glen Preserve Trail, near Yucaipa and about 9 miles from Beaumont, is a 2.4-mile relaxing walk through the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains.
Want to stay closer to home? Put a bookend on your Labor Day with an evening neighborhood stroll under the stars.
If a day in and on the water piques your interest, you’ll find plenty of choices near Pardee Homes communities. Consider a beach outing at one of the dozens of beaches near San Diego. About 30 miles from Las Vegas, Boulder Beach on Lake Mead entices with more than a mile of shoreline great for swimming, sunning and picnicking. Test your water legs on a wakeboard at Big Bear Lake, 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
