Spend Wisely on Design in Your New Home

So, you’ve just moved into a new house and you’re not sure how to decorate it. Or maybe you’re moving into a bigger home, but don’t know how you’ll fill it with furniture and décor. Well, you don’t have to break the bank to live in a stylish and well-furnished home that you love. Some things are worth splurging on and some things are okay to save on. Here are a few tips on how to spend wisely on design and still have a beautifully decorated home.

Take inventory.
Before you move into your new space, know exactly what you own and if it will work in your next place, especially if you’re combining households or more than one style. This is also a good time to determine what pieces you’ll keep and which ones you can donate or give away, making space in your new home for the things you really love. Consider trying furniture in different rooms and changing out color schemes, and make sure the pieces will all still work together. Want to upgrade? Now might be the time to trade the old, rectangular coffee table for that modern, marble one you’ve had your eye on. And, once you know what you want to bring to the new house, you can make a list of what you need. Make sure to get a good feel for how much space you have to work within each room by measuring ahead of time. This will also save you the headache of ending up with too much or too little furniture.

Where to splurge.
Though some design trends come and go, there are timeless pieces you can purchase and keep for years to come. Just like you would spend more on your base wardrobe, splurging on key items that you wear every day, you should invest in some more expensive items in your home, like the big pieces of furniture or other staples that define your style. Classic designs, like the iconic Chesterfield sofa and sturdy Windsor-style dining chairs, will last you through seasons of changing trends, and will work with other pieces if you decide to change things around in the future. It helps to choose your higher-priced furniture in neutral shades that will work with everything. Plus, you always have the option of using your creative skills to do a little DIY upgrade by reupholstering chairs, swapping cabinet hardware or changing the legs on a table.

Where to save.
You have your base pieces and now you need the accessories, textiles and décor that make the space complete. These are good places to save when developing your design. Go to secondhand stores for smaller pieces to finish off a room, like side tables, lamps and art. Often, they will be unique items that you won’t be able to get anywhere else – and that your neighbor won’t own an identical copy of. You can also try consignment stores and thrift shops for discounted items. Even letting friends and family know what you’re looking for could get you a freebie or two. Remember, textiles are great for layering in your space, creating depth in a room. And accessories are easy to switch out as your needs or tastes change. The same goes for décor, which can change with the seasons, holidays or when you need a fresh new look.
