Throw a Mardi Gras Party!

Don’t fret if you can’t make it to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. While the Big Easy is renowned for its epic Fat Tuesday festivities, we’ve got some great ideas to host a fun, smaller-scale “Mardi party” at home.

Set the tone with colorful décor.
Mardi Gras signature colors are purple, green and gold. Go for the gold (and green and purple) in all your themed party décor. Set aside festive props for guests to use in Instagram photos, like beads, masquerade masks, feather boas and fun signs with Mardi Gras sayings.

Celebrate in style.
Ask your guests to wear purple, green and gold. Or have them come in costume like New Orleans residents, who traditionally celebrate in elaborate get-ups and sequin and glitter masks. Fun ideas include dressing as movie characters, politicians or tongue-in-cheek jokes.

Feast the Louisiana way.
“Mardi Gras” is French for Fat Tuesday. The celebration takes place the day before Ash Wednesday, 40 days before Easter, to allow merrymakers to indulge before Lent begins. For your party, feast on authentic Cajun food that doesn’t require Louisiana chef skills. Whip up a savory classic like jambalaya or chicken and andouille gumbo, both quintessential one-pot recipes brimming with bold flavors. Red beans and rice is also a Pelican State favorite that will give your party authentic New Orleans cred.

A Mardi Gras party won’t be complete until you have a king cake. Treat your party-goers to the real thing from Manny Randazzo King Cakes, Haydel’s Bakery or Gambino’s Bakery.

Craft a celebratory cocktail.
For a classic New Orleans cocktail, make your guests a Sazerac. Thought to be the Big Easy’s first cocktail, this New Orleans original combines rye whiskey, bitters and absinthe. Or serve a Pimm’s Cup, made from a gin-based spirit with the flavor of fruit. Abita and Dixie beer, both from Louisiana, also add an authentic touch to your beverage selection.

Make the music upbeat.
From Dixieland jazz to swamp pop, keep your guests in the carnival spirit all night! Include classics by Fats Domino, Dr. John and the Neville Brothers. Or find a great Mardi Gras playlist via a Google or streaming search.

LivingSmart makes entertaining easy.
Every Pardee home includes the LivingSmart® program with eco-friendly, smart technology, so entertaining for Mardi Gras and all year long is a breeze. All your home devices are designed to work with Amazon, so you can ask Alexa to turn down the lights or turn up the zydeco music. You can also adjust the temperature with just a click on your smartphone or tablet.

Break out the beads and gather your revelers. Let the good times roll, or as NOLA residents say, “Laissez les bons temps rouler!”
